CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

By the time they reached the valley, the sun was in the treetops, the bright birdsong of the dawn chorus giving way to just the occasional call. Charlie had taken the lead on the way down, guiding them through the trees, until they reached a patch of head-high nettles, their giant leaves fuzzed with venomous-looking stingers. There was no way through.

‘Stand aside!’ called Nathan.

Charlie and Aruna shared an amused look as Nathan marched forward, wielding his three-quarter staff, battling the nettles as if they were a marauding army, and leaving a clear path in his wake.

‘Safe to pass,’ he announced proudly.

‘If the sheriff guards his castle with very tall plants, we’re going to be fine,’ said Charlie, and Aruna stifled a smile.

They stopped in the shade of a big tree to catch their breath. Charlie looked all around, but there was still no sign of the river.

‘Hey, so what’s your weapon anyway?’ said Nathan, turning to Aruna suddenly.

‘Excuse me?’

‘Well, Charlie got a bow and arrow, and I got this staff… What did you get?’

Aruna grinned slightly, then pulled out a dagger, the short, sharp blade glinting dangerously in the light.

‘Woah!’ said Nathan. ‘Cool! Can you throw it?’

Aruna shook her head. ‘I don’t think so. The weight’s not right.’

‘Then what’s it for?’

‘Stabbing people in the back?’ suggested Widsith.

Nathan laughed loudly, but Charlie just rolled her eyes and marched on down the hill.

‘Come on,’ she said, ‘we must be nearly at the river now.’

Aruna quickened her pace to join Charlie at the front.

‘What’s with the bird?’ she whispered. ‘He really seems to have it in for me.’

‘Oh, don’t worry about Widsith,’ said Charlie. ‘Just takes him a while to warm up. He’s all right once you get to know him.’

The ground beneath them was flattening, the air growing heavier. Peering through the trees, Charlie suddenly noticed something glinting up ahead.

‘The river!’ shouted Charlie. ‘Straight ahead!’

They all picked up their pace, weaving swiftly through the trees until they were standing shoulder to shoulder on the sandy bank of a wide, shallow river.

The walk had been thirsty work, and the three children knelt to drink, cupping their hands and taking grateful gulps. The forest children had given them a few provisions for lunch, and they all agreed they wouldn’t find a better spot than this. While Nathan gathered their supplies, Charlie kicked off her shoes and let her feet dangle in the water.
